More specifically it is caused by the internal focus lens. The internal focus lens is a part of the lens block assembly. The C error code appears when the focus lens is not able to initialize properly. When this problem occurs you will typically have focus issues and you may also hear a buzzing noise coming from the lens. Neither the autofocus nor manual focus will work.
Most of time this problem is caused by some sort of impact or rough handling of your AX Reapply power and turn it on. This will reset the lens drive circuitry as well as the lens. We check over all aspects of the camcorder during this process. Once an estimate is approved we will replace or repair the defective part or parts or the camcorder.
Whenever any repairs are done to the lens or lens drive circuits it is very important to perform a full lens alignment to the camcorder. Failure to do this results in poor auto focus and manual focus performance.
We make sure all alignments to the lens are done properly as well as check all the critical focus alignments to the lens. If you have any questions before sending your camcorder in for repair we welcome you to call and talk to one of our experienced Sony technicians. The symptoms of this problem are a longer start up time, slight vibration coming from the lens of the camcorder, and you may also see a vignetting to the image.
Reattach power and turn it back on. You may have to do this several times. This may get you through your shoot but eventually this issue will need to be addressed. Continuing to live with this problem can cause unnecessary damage to the lens. How We Repair it: Repairs are done to your AX by doing an alignment to the optical or lens drive circuits.
We also do a full lens alignment to the camcorder as well. If you have also been noticing focus issues with your camcorder, that will also be corrected in this repair. This is usually caused by something hitting the mic holder. We have also seen that putting the camcorder in a tight bag can put pressure on the mic holder as well as causing a plastic portion of the mic holder to bend.
And lastly if the camcorder suffered impact and the mic holder was hit, it could completely break it off. What You Can Do: Although we typically never recommend you taking a screwdriver to your camcorder, this part is very easy to replace.
We have created a video giving you step-by-step instructions on how to replace it. There are only 2 screws holding it in place. If you have sent your camcorder in for servicing or repairs, we would be happy to replace your broken mic holder for you. What You Can Do: If you are having problems with slot A, use slot B in the meantime until you are able to send your camcorder in for repair.
We properly diagnose and confirm the issue and let you know the problem. If we find that the SD card slot board is the problem, we will replace it with a new part. We have also seen situations where it is dead and will not come on altogether. What You Can Do: If you are in the middle of a shoot and need it to work, you can try raising or lowering it slowly while looking through the eyepiece.
It should be able to get you through your shoot before having to send it in. How Do We Fix It: Usually the flexible circuit board that connects the viewfinder to the rest of the camcorder goes bad.
If that is the case, the circuit board will need to be replaced. We mostly see this problem when recording in the progressive 24p or 30p modes but if ignored, this problem can get worse and you will eventually see the issue when recording interlaced 60i footage as well.
If the picture is clear, this should get you through your last shoot prior to sending your camcorder in for repair. How We Repair It: Once we receive your camcorder we will fully diagnose the issue and give you an exact estimate.
We make sure to do all appropriate testing to the camcorder to make absolute sure that the problem has been reliably repaired. When you put a power source on your AX AC adaptor or battery it sends a singular voltage to the internal power circuits of the camera. These circuits send many different and specific voltages to various parts of the camcorder. If one of power circuits is compromised you will have problems powering up the camcorder.
What You Can Do: The first thing to try is a different power source. A different battery or AC power adaptor. If you are still having problems that means the problem is caused by an internal circuit.
How We Fix It: When we receive your Sony AX we take it apart and check the circuitry of the camcorder to determine where the problem is. Most of the time another circuit or part of the camera has a failed which in turn surges power from the internal power circuits. This can blow or damage the power circuits.
We identify the problem and once the estimate is approved we replace or repair the circuit that was damaged. Note: It is impossible to diagnose a power problem without taking apart the camcorder.
If a shop gives you an exact estimate without looking at it they are not being very truthful with you. We have an informative article about how you can protect yourself from this common practice. Bait and Switch Article. You may have issues getting it to manually focus, or the back focus may be off To test back focus, zoom in on your subject, manually focus and zoom out.
The camcorder should maintain focus. What Can You Do: If the lens in your camcorder is out of alignment it could cause a lot of the issues listed above. You can make some simple adjustments to your camcorder and your filming techniques to get you through until you are able to send in your camcorder for repair. First, shoot in better lighting and close your lenses aperture or iris to let in less light. Doing this will give you a larger field of focus. When testing lenses that are out of alignment we find that having your aperture or iris larger than F4 makes it much more difficult for the lens focus sharply.
If you are shooting a lot with auto focus, shooting in progressive modes 24p or 30p can also cause auto focus performance to suffer. Part of the reason for this it is due to motion blur. When you have motion blur the optical circuits have a much more difficult time locking focus on your subject. In this situation we would recommend shooting on 60i. If the lens slightly out of alignment this will also play a big factor in poor auto focus performance.
There are a series of alignments that we perform to put the lens back into optimal working order. When you get your camcorder back it will be focusing the way that it did when it was new. There are typically no two drops that are the same. You may have dropped it on hard concrete or soft carpet. It may have landed on the front lens area or it may have sustained damage elsewhere. Another variable is how high it was dropped from or how hard the impact was?
What You Can Do: The first thing to do is to remove power, look over the camcorder and inspect it very well. If there is a part or parts of the camcorder that are broken off and hanging by a wire harness or flexible circuit board, I would not try to power it back on and continue using it.
The exposed wiring may short the internal circuitry of the camcorder and cause more damage. If you do not see any visible damage or just see a scuff or two, then attach your power source and turn power back on.
We recommend carefully checking all functions of the camcorder. How We Repair It: Impact damage is impossible to diagnose without physically examining the camcorder. Once we receive your camcorder we look it over and closely inspect all areas of the unit notating the areas of damage. Your camcorder will have to be taken apart during this process. Once an estimate is approved and depending on what is wrong we will replace the damaged parts or assemblies of your camcorder.
We also check and realign all critical alignments of the camcorder. An example of this is your lens. Lenses can be very sensitive to impact and can easily be sent out of whack with a simple drop. The goal is to return your AX to you as if nothing has ever happened. We have also seen many situations where there has been excessive moisture or rain that has gotten into the camcorder. Water or liquid damage can be straightforward or a very tricky thing to fix.
There are typically many variables that come into play like how much water got into it, was it submerged, and how long has the liquid been in the camera for. Also, where did the liquid enter from?
What You Can Do: The first thing to do is to immediately remove power and remove anything that may be connected to it like media, memory cards, external microphones and so on. Look the camcorder over and inspect it very well.
Try and dry off any moisture that you see around the camcorder. Do not attempt to try and use the camcorder for at least 48 hours. After you have given sufficient time for things to dry out, reconnect power to the camcorder and check over all functionality. If you notice any abnormal functionality, immediately discontinue use and disconnect any power source from it. If after thoroughly testing your camcorder all checks fine, you may continue using it however you may want to be cautious and always have a backup with you in case it fails.
How We Repair It: Water or liquid damage is impossible to diagnose without physically examining the camcorder so your AX will need to be sent in to assess the damage. We use special chemicals to neutralize oxidation and corrosion in the camcorder.
